About
Morison Communications began with a bid to publish Model Aviation Canada, the internal magazine of the Model Aeronautics Association of Canada. At the time, company principal Keith Morison was working as a freelance photographer and was looking for additional work to flesh out his income. The magazine presented a good opportunity, and was on a subject that he had been involved with for over 20 years at the time.
In November of 1999, Morison Communications was awarded a three-year contract to publish the 68 page Magazine Starting in January 2000. The same time, Keith Morison landed a job with the Calgary Herald as a staff photographer. Much of the first magazine was produced on a laptop from a hotel room, but it quickly became clear that additional staff was needed.
Morison Communications added the talents of Lisette Dansereau who quickly cleaned up the look and flow of the magazine and brought a consistent presence to the product. With ten years of desktop publishing experience, and a long time friendship with Keith, Lisette was an easy and quick addition to the team.
As a product serving a national audience, one of the first changes made to the content of Model Aviation Canada was to increase the French language content. Jacques Des Becquets, a volunteer, has been helping the association with translations, and provides this service for Model Aviation Canada.
With some effort, and the support of the Association, Model Aviation has grown from a 68-page newsletter, to a 100 page bi-lingual magazine. The magazine is better received by the membership of the association and has increased in advertising revenue, both clear indicators of success.
In the fall of 2002., Keith left the Calgary Herald and has re-structured Morison Communications, taking on much of the day to day operations by the spring of 2004. 2005 saw the addition of Colleen Hughes to the Morison Communications Family ... literally. With Colleen came the vision and inspiration for C-ing Magazine, a critically acclaimed quarterly that was launched in the summer of 2005. She also brings with her a diploma in Photojournalism and a degree in Communications Studies.
This company has grown from the single idea of trying to do something better. Together with our partners we try and create better vehicles for communication. While we prefer to work within our areas of interest, but we are always looking for new challenges.
